i'm home?

i'm back in korea now. in seoul, staying with my friend until new year's day.

it doesn't feel like home just yet. all the while throughout my trip, whenever i thought about going home, i was thinking of going home to toronto, not korea. when i think about being here, i almost dread going back to work. but i'm sure the feeling will pass.

there's so much to tell about the trip, i don't know where to start. i'm debating whether to just put up the photos and annotate them, like last year's, rather than try to recount everything.

but i will mention this: i spent over $80 on dvds. and i only got 45 of them.

there are these 'shops' that sell dvds for eight quai. one canadian dollar is worth just over five quai. and i say 'shop' because they are actually just tables set up in the sidewalk of a busy street, or at the front of an alleyway. at first, i had bought only four or six discs, because i didn't really see that much i liked.

then when i thought about it, and went back, i had opened the floodgates. i picked up another 28 in one shot. the next day, i got another six or so.

now, you must understand that these dvds are clearly pirated. a lot of them are region-free, and the rest have labels that indicate that they are for certain regions. i have yet to check them. i may have to buy a region-free player.

they would also try to hawk more recent movies, like LOTR 2, HP 2, or the new 007 flick. these, i've been told by locals, are handycam shots, and not really worth the 8 quai.

to illustrate how illegal these 'shops' are, i'll tell you some things i saw and heard. firstly, what i heard: if a cop comes buy, they're usually paid off to turn a blind eye. what i saw: i was walking down this fairly busy shopping street, and i saw on the corner a bit of a hubbub. i took a look, and saw the familiar plastic slips that the discs come in (most don't sell them with a jewel case). but these guys did not even have tables - just a cardboard box bottom, and a suitcase on top, open, displaying their wares.

i was perusing one guy's suitcase when all of a sudden, like a flock of birds or a school of fish, every vendor, seemingly with one mind, slammed the tops of their cases, grabbed their boxes, and ran. then they scattered. some ran down alleys, some just up the street. it was the heat, or someone had cried wolf.

in anycase, it was hilarious, and the one vendor that i was with just before had my disc out, asking me if i still wanted it. i took it, a shady transaction in the middle of the sidewalk. but i think for 'strcitly ballroom', a movie i've never seen but heard good things about, and the free show, was well worth the $1.50.

i'm going to china

so i'm in hong kong international airport right now. on my way to shanghai.

christmas in hong kong was not at all christmasy, festive, or anything. they put up decorations everywhere, and play terrible elevator christmas music (including an horrific 'macarena/every-christmas-song-imaginable' medley), but since it's not really cold, and it doesn't snow, and there is no family around, it didn't feel like christmas at all. in fact, it felt more like new year's eve.

on christmas eve, they closed down a couple of downtown streets, and plopped down a skate park and some x-box kiosks, and a stage for live music. the whole damn thing was sponsored by msn/x-box, and i got a shot of a cute msn butterfly girl (you'll see when i post the pic). i don't know why they go crazy like this, but i guess they are just happy to get two holidays in a row (they celebrate boxing day here, too; it's a british thing; btw, if anyone knows the origin/meaning of boxing day, please tell me).

pork neck pies and cuban cigars

so i'm hong kong, for those of you who don't know already.

i made it safely. we arrived here on saturday afternoon, around 3 pm, HK time.

i'm at a free internet kiosk-type thing, so i don't have time to write much.

just thought i'd fill some of you in.

Jingle Bells, Batman Smells

i put up some photos of the SLP Christmas party (which was last night).

you can see them here.

i have just spent a lot of money

i bought the camera.

here are some pics (which will open in a new window) of my apartment in all its disasterous glory: [ bed ] [ desk ] [ kitchen ] [ toilet ] [ wall ]

here are some pics of my cat, boots: [ tv ] [ sepia ]

here is a pic of me: [ self-portrait ]

i could only talk him down W10,000, so the total for the camera and a 128MB xD memory card was W725,000.

so magnetonic should become more interesting now that pictures can start going up.

a girl named sue

my friend sue is here. she came a couple of days ago, to seoul. we met up yesterday and hung out for a bit in seoul. then she came to daejeon to see how i live. there isn't much to do here, and we got in at around 2 am, so we just crashed. today we went out for lunch and such.

it feels really really strange to have someone so familiar with me here, in such an unfamiliar place. or, at least, in a place where i've gotten used to not knowing people at all, or for only a few months.

my headache has not subsided. it has been four or five days now, and i'm getting a little more concerned. i plan to see a doctor tomorrow.

i had a headache this big

i left work early today. i had a wicked headache, and i wasn't going to be able to handle those noisy afternoon kids. it's mostly subsided right now, and i think it was a cause of the ice cream that i just ate.

i also picked up our plane tickets for hong kong. they ended up being W542,000, airport taxes included. this works out to be about CA$700, which i guess isn't too bad. though, we don't have anything for shanghai yet. apparently there is a hong kong-shanghai train you can take, which takes 23 hours. it would definitely be an adventure to ride a train through china that long. it would also save us two nights of accomodation. but it would also eat up two days.

the travel agent here was telling me that if i book a hkg-sha flight from here in korea it would most likely be more expensive. there are hkg-sha flights probably at least 20 times a day, so we're bound to get one.

i am still really looking forward to eating lots of chinese food.

those are some mighty wonderful sniffs

there's a thing i've noticed in korea. they really like english. this is partly why i have a job here. they're crazy about it. even children's clothes have english logos and things on them.

the funny thing is, no one who makes these things ever bothers to get them proofread by someone who actually knows english.

witness, one of my favourite things: "Garu is the boy whom Pucca loves very much. Soundless jumping power and remarkable landing are his abilities."

these strange english phrases abound on korean stationery. there are more stationery shops than there are public garbage cans.

here are some i recently stumbled upon, spelling mistakes, funny grammar and all...

"After all these years
you have been my favorate person."

"What's up!
you are look so sad, That's to bad
let's smile! look so happy..."

"Sometimes, it is hard to be a grown-up,
knowing all these sad and happy things."

"The little clover wished me a good luck"

"There are delicious,
happy sniffs around you!"

space-age bachelor pad

some of you may be happy to know that my OISE/UT application had arrived on time. it took 24 hours and 31 minutes to get from SLP to U of T.

now it is just to wait. offers will get mailed out on 1 april 2003.

in other news: i can't sleep. it's now almost 3 am, and i'll have to be up in at least 6 hours - wal-mart did not have any cat litter, so i had to go to a vet's office nearby. german clumping cat litter is W15,000 there - i stuck the cable into the wall outlet, and i'm now getting the same channels as i was before, give or take a couple with bad reception. i still have not paid a won for it. here's to free cable.

i can't wait for hong kong. that is, i can't wait to have some real chinese food. the stuff they have here is mainly korean-style chinese: 탕수육, 짜장면, 짬뽕, etc. i need some beef with black-bean sauce on ho-fun noodles. and dim sum. i expect shanghai to have some awesome food too.
